I got lucky this year. One pricey gift (Wii) with only a few cables to connect was a huge difference from past Christmas’ filled with lots of small parts and vague instructions. While some parents were fortunate not to have to work the day after Christmas, I am sure many with the day “off” were busy assembling new toys for anxious children. Who had the worst experience?

As local election season approaches, now is a good time to determine if you are registered to vote. Unlike other states, Connecticut only allows members of the same political party to vote in a primary. While it is too late to switch from one party to another and vote in the upcoming Naugatuck mayoral primaries on March 9, 2009, unaffiliated voters can still register with a party up to the day before the primary.
Registration or affiliating with a party is easy. You may do so in person at the Naugatuck Town Hall, 229 Church Street, Naugatuck, CT 06770; or by mail if you have the registration form. You may download the registration form by clicking on the link located on the right side of this blog.
Make your voice heard.

Eileen McCaughern, President and founder of Retired Greyhounds as Pets
Connecticut (REGAP – CT), was recently honored as “Hero of the Year” by the Animal Planet. Ms. McCaughern has rescued an estimated FIVE THOUSAND greyhounds over a thirty five year period by finding homes for retired racers.
While Ms. McCaughern lives in Bethany, many of the greyhounds you have seen around the Borough have come via her organization, including our own, Casey Stengal.

One of many lucky greyhounds who found a home through Eileen McCaughern.
Congratulations to a great lady who has dedicated much of her life to an outstanding cause.

All for the Greyhounds
Borough Employees and Board of Education Employees will square off tonight in a charity basketball game tonight (Friday) at 6:00 PM, at Naugatuck High School. The game will kick-off the 2008-2009 basketball season for Naugy, with proceeds benefiting both the boys and girls teams.
Admission is $3.00, with $1.00 off the price if a canned good is brought for the Food Bank.
I do not bet, nor do I encourage it, but my early line is Borough Employees by 3.
Hope to see you there.

Patriot Fans in Happier Days
The Giants lose and the Patriots win on the same Sunday? A year ago that would not have sounded so bizarre, but this year has been different. As a lifelong Patriot fan in divided football country, it has been a tough year given last year’s Super Bowl loss and a lackluster defense this year. As much as I would like to complain, I have to put things in perspective given the Patriots’ difficult history prior to the dynasty.
I give a tremendous amount of credit to what the Giants have been able to do over the past year. It pains me to say it, but they are clearly the best team in football right now. Today’s loss was understandable given the nature of rivalry games. I would love to see a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl, but that is not looking particularly promising for one of the teams right now.

For all of those who celebrate Christmas with a tree, or simply like a little decoration in the Winter, I have one question: Real or artificial tree?

"Upstairs" Mezzo tree from Christmas, 2007
Our family has both, real upstairs, and artificial downstairs. The tree in our basement is the same one carried out of the attic every year when I was a child, decorated with every ornament imaginable. Since I possess little to no taste or concept of style, our upstairs tree is Eileen’s doing.

The Naugatuck Basketball Association (“The Friday Night League”) will be holding its first round of try-outs tonight (12/4/2008) at City Hill Middle School from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Boys and girls ages 14 through 17 (or 18 if still in graduating class) are eligible to play. Registration fee is $70.00, and a birth certificate is required.
The league is a great opportunity for those not playing high school basketball to experience organized hoops. The season runs from January through the end of March, with games played on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights. Average time commitment is usually one game, occasionally two games, and one practice per week.
The league is well-run my numerous volunteer coaches, organized through the Naugatuck Park Department and supported by local businesses through sponsorship. I have had the pleasure to coach the team sponsored by Naugatuck Valley Savings and Loan since 1993.
