Congratulations Naugatuck Greyhounds Soccer – 11/6/2009
Congratulations to both the Boys and Girls Naugatuck High School Greyhound soccer teams on their respective Naugatuck Valley League (“NVL”) Tournament Championships won last night at Ray Snyder Field at Municipal Stadium. In consecutive games, the boys defeated Watertown 2-1, while the Lady Greyhounds dispatched Torrington by a score of 5-1.
Manny Nobre was the most valuable player of the boys tournament while Danielle Charette took the honors for the girls. The NVL tournament championships culminated dominant regular seasons by both teams. With league championships in hand, each team will now set their sites on state titles in the coming weeks. Congratulations to Coaches Art Nunes and first year girls coach Jose Sendra on fantastic seasons and best wishes to the Greyhounds in bringing home two state championships. (information obtained from Waterbury Republican-American website www.rep-am.com).
Also deserving of praise are the numerous volunteers who have supported Naugatuck Youth Soccer (“NYS”) over the years. Many of the current champions received their start and developed their skills playing with NYS. Lots of Friday night footskils, pre-packaged snacks and juice boxes and countless hours of selfless devotion to players of all abilities have produced some great high school soccer players and outstanding young men and women.

Thank you so much Mr. Mezzo. Both teams worked so hard this year to deserve this. One question though. Do you see how we had to schedule all of the games at municipal, because our field was a hazard. How do you feel about installing turf? I am a current soccer player, (who enjoyed the victory very much) but how could you in your opinion help the highschool athletics with this problem?

Hi Isabelle:
You and your teammates had a fantastic season. Naugatuck soocer makes all of us proud not only for what its players do on the field, but also for what outstanding young women and men you are off the field as well.
I am completely in favor of installing synthetic grass at the high school complex. We have been meeting and researching the cost and logistics since I took office in May, 2009. Installing synthetic grass on the upper field complex (which would then host football and soccer) will cost approximately TWO MILLION ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND and 00/100THS ($2,100,000.00) DOLLARS.
We have listed the project on our five (5) year local capital improvement plan and designated THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND and 00/100THS ($300,000.00) DOLLARS for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. We are currently working with our state and federal legislative delegations to seek funding for the project. In addition, a local group of stakeholders are investigating private fundraising opportunities.
Your assistance in contacting our legislators would be greatly appreciated. If you email me at bob@bobmezzo.com, I can send you a contact list and some “talking points” to include in any correspondence.
Naugatuck soccer works too hard and plays too well to have playoff games located out of town. It will take some work to obtain the necessary funding, but we hope to have a first-class facility for all our outdoor sports teams in the near future.
Thanks for writing.
Bob
