Long Term School Facility Planning Committee Community Survey – 2/25/2011

The Naugatuck Long Term School Facility Planning Committee Community Survey may be accessed at the following link:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FMPYCJZ

The Long Term School Facility Planning Committee is currently researching the ideal structure of our school district.  Our approach has been to envision the physical assets and configuration of Naugatuck schools ten (10) to twenty (20) years from now.  While there is representation on the Committee from various stakeholders, this endeavor is not a function of the Naugatuck Board of Education.  The Mission Statement of the Committee is as follows:

“To formulate a facility plan to be fully implemented by the year 2025, that provides the maximum opportunity to provide a quality education for all Naugatuck students recognizing the need to provide for issues relating to configuration of the school district, new technologies, potential green construction techniques and the re-purpose of existing, obsolete school structures for other suitable uses.”

We are attempting to obtain input from as many stakeholders as possible.  Such stakeholders include but are not limited to parents, students, taxpayers, teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, custodians, secretaries, cafeteria workers, business owners, and other Borough employees.  While the Committee will ultimately be responsible for determining its own recommendations, we believe that doing so without public input would be counterproductive and inappropriate.

The following survey attempts to gauge stakeholder opinion on numerous topics pertinent to the Committee’s subject matter.  The survey will be available in electronic form via numerous websites, and in paper format at multiple public facilities and schools.  We respectfully ask that each responder submit only one (1) survey, and that all questions are answered to the best of one’s ability.

The hard copy or paper version will soon be available in various common locations as referenced above.  Completed paper surveys will be collected and manually inputted to the electronic tabulations.

The Long Term School Facility Planning Committee is comprised of the following members:

Jessie Ballenger Chosen African Mayor of the Day – 2/25/2011

Posted by Bob on under Daily Blogs | Be the First to Comment

The Naugatuck Cultural Council is honored to announce the appointment of Jessica “Jessie” O. Ballenger as the 2011 African-American Mayor of the Day.  As African-American History Month comes to a close, Ms. Ballenger will be honored at a short ceremony planned for this coming Monday, February 28, 2011, 11:00 AM, at Town Hall.  The ceremony will include the raising of the American Flag followed by the national flag of the African continent.  After a brief speaking portion, all attendees will return to the fourth (4th) floor of Town Hall for coffee and pictures.  The event is open to the public.

Ms. Ballenger has lived in Naugatuck since 1978.  She is the loving wife of Josephus Ballenger and the proud mother of three (3) daughters, Alicia, Michelle and Elizabeth; all graduates from Naugatuck High School.  Ms. Ballenger has been an integral part of our Naugatuck Family for many years as an active parishioner of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish, past Chair of the Waterbury Chapter of the National Congress of Black Women, Inc., and a significant contributor to a the Borough’s “African American Committee”. A professional educator since 1971 and current assistant principal, Ms. Ballenger is a passionate advocate for quality education and the principles of lifelong learning.  In 2008, she was selected for an acting role playing herself in the weekly television production of “The Principals Office”.  We are privileged to bestow the title of African-American Mayor of the Day on Ms. Jessica “Jessie” O. Ballenger.

The mission of the Naugatuck Cultural Council is to recognize and celebrate the numerous heritages that strive in the Borough.   Monday’s (2/28/2011) recognition marks the start of an increased focus to supplant our existing Mayor of the Day ceremonies with those from additional cultures.  We welcome any suggestions which would support this endeavor.

Parking Ban Revoked – 2/15/2011

Posted by Bob on February 15, 2011 under Daily Blogs | Be the First to Comment

The indefinite parking ban instituted on January 28, 2011, is being revoked effective of today, February 15, 2011, beginning at 4:00 PM.  Several consecutive days without Winter storms combined with warming temperatures have allowed the Department of Public Works the opportunity to widen numerous, narrow streets and remove snow from many intersections.  Further implementation of the parking ban shall be evaluated on a storm-by-storm basis.  Motor vehicle operators and pedestrians are still advised to exercise a heightened sense of awareness while traveling on Borough streets as significant snow and ice accumulation remains.  We would like to thank all Borough residents for their cooperation during the duration the parking ban was in effect.  The memorandum emailed to applicable emergency management personnel can be viewed here.

Potholes Notification – 2/11/2011

Posted by Bob on February 11, 2011 under Daily Blogs | 3 Comments to Read

Potholes will become an unfortunate but common sight in the Borough in the coming weeks.  Significant accumulation of snow and ice combined with warming temperatures have already created several areas on various streets.  While our Department of Public Works has already identified and filled several, much of our information comes from residents. Please contact us at publicworks@naugatuck-ct.gov (email) or 203-720-7072 should you notice a pothole in your neighborhood. Please also be as specific as possible when sending an email, or leaving a voice mail message after hours.  A notification system will soon be included on the Borough’s website: www.naugatuck-ct.gov.  The link directly to the pothole page can be viewed here.

Upon today’s (2/8/2011) completion of snow removal from the roofs at the Naugatuck Police Station and the gymnasium at Hop Brook Elementary School, the state of emergency declaration of Thursday, February 3, 2011, shall be revoked.  Normal bidding procedures and requirements shall be restored.  The indefinite parking ban shall remain in effect.

Thank you to all those involved who helped remove snow and ice from the roofs of Naugatuck’s schools and other municipal buildings.  Your work has helped protect millions of dollars worth of assets, but more importantly ensured the safety of students and employees who occupy these buildings on a daily basis.

Schools Roofs Will Be Clear by Monday Morning – 2/6/2011

Posted by Bob on February 6, 2011 under Daily Blogs | 3 Comments to Read

School roofs will be clear of snow by Monday (2/7/2011) morning, with very limited exceptions.  The following schools are completely clear as of 2:15 PM on Sunday (2/6/2011):

  • City Hill Middle School;
  • Cross Street Intermediate School;
  • Hillside Intermediate School;
  • Andrew Avenue Elementary School;
  • Maple Hill Elementary School;
  • Salem Elementary School;
  • Western Elementary School;
  • Prospect Street Pre-Kindergarten School; and
  • Naugatuck Day Care Center (Borough-owned building).

Work continues at Central Avenue Elementary School and is expected to be completed by 4:00 PM.  Clean-up of snow and ice removed from roofs is being completed currently.

Approximately three (3) of fifteen (15) sections of Naugatuck High School are being addressed at this time (2:15 PM), but will be completed by the morning (2/7/2011).  Most resources was diverted to the high school early this afternoon to finish this absolutely enormous operation.

The gymnasium at Hop Brook Elementary School still needs to be clear.  A crew is scheduled to complete this task beginning Monday (2/7/2011) morning, and complete the task by the end of the day.  This should prevent students from attending, but may alter physical education classes for Monday (2/7/2011) only.  This decision will be made by educational administration.

As of this time, there should be no reason that would prevent schools from being in session district-wide on Monday (2/7/2011) relating to school roofs.  Custodial staff is addressing relatively minor leaks at various schools, but no structural damage is being reported.  Any delays relating to road icing will be assessed separately by the Superintendent and the Business Manager in accordance with standard procedure.

The people to thank this weekend for accomplishing this mammoth task are too many to mention at this time.  We will do so later in the week.  The structural integrity of our buildings have been secured through great effort.

While it is my personal opinion that football season ended in New England three (3) weeks ago, good luck to Cheesehead and Terrible  fans.  Enjoy the game.
