Naugatuck will formally celebrate Saint Patrick’s day this Saturday, March 17, 2012, in traditional fashion.  Festivities will start early as the Maura Gill Horgan Irish Centre (198 Meadow Street, Naugatuck, CT 06770) will host an open house from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM.  WATR 1320 AM will broadcast live from the Centre, which will feature live Irish Step Dancing as well as coffee, tea and Irish soda bread.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians invite Borough residents and friends to join together to celebrate Mass at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish (318 Church Street, Naugatuck, CT 06770) beginning at 9:00 AM.  Immediately following Mass, a short parade will follow from Saint Francis to the Town Hall (229 Church Street, Naugatuck, CT 06770).

In accordance with tradition, a brief ceremony will be held at Town Hall at 10:00 AM, to honor the Irish-American Mayor of the Day.  This year, there are actually two recipients.  Kathryn Green and her brother David Cronin will be honored as Co Irish-American Mayors of the Day.  Both Ms. Green and Mr. Cronin are long-time Borough residents who trace their ancestry back to Counties Cork and Kerry on the Emerald Isle.

Ms. Green graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor of science degree, and the University of Hartford with a master’s degree, both in nursing.  Ms. Green worked as a school nurse and taught health classes for the Naugatuck Board of Education before retiring in 1973.  She is active in numerous activities at the Naugatuck Senior Center and serves as the Chair of the Naugatuck Elderly Commission.  Ms. Green is a former graduate of Saint Francis School in Naugatuck, a current member of the Naugatuck Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and a Communicant of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish.

Mr. Cronin graduated from Naugatuck High School and worked at Uniroyal for twenty five (25) years.  After the closing of Uniroyal, Mr. Cronin served as a driver for Sealy Mattress and Ryder Trucking for another twenty three (23) years before retiring in 1988.  Mr. Cronin shares his life with with his lovely wife Antoinette, with whom he raised three (3) children, David, Dennis and Dana Marie.  They are the proud grandparents of eight (8), and great-grandparents of two (2).  Mr. Cronin is the Past-President of the Naugatuck Taxpayers in Revolt and Naugatuck Ancient Order of Hibernians.  He currently sits on the Naugatuck Zoning Board of Appeals and the Federation for Connecticut Taxpayers.

After the Mayor of the Day ceremony, all are invited to the Naugatuck Historical Society (195 Water Street, Naugatuck, CT 06770) for coffee and Irish soda bread.  Later in the evening, The Continental Room (1006 New Haven Road) will also be hosting a buffet dinner with DJ Pat Pattonelli and the Horgan Dancers providing entertainment.  Additional information can be viewed in the Naugatuck Patch article appearing last week.

Various Naugatuck establishments such as Carrie Welton’s (66 Church Street), Cook’s Cafe (203 Church Street), Dee Man’s Bar and Grill (1370 New Haven Road), Duffy’s Tavern (104 Water Street), Jesse Camille’s (615 North Main Street), The Milestone Inn (18 Neumann Street), Mr. D’s Tavern (876 Rubber Avenue Extension), The Old Corner Cafe (178 North Main Street), Santos Restaurant (152 Church Street), Slainte (1221 New Haven Road), and Sullivan’s Cafe (22 Church Street) will be serving Irish fare throughout the day, with many offering live entertainment.  I am sure I missed a couple, so please feel free to add more in the comment section and I will include.  Please enjoy Naugatuck’s great restaurants responsibly.

Garnet and grey will be replaced by green tomorrow (3/17/2012) in the Borough for all those of Irish descent, and those that would like to be for a day.  Have a happy and safe Saint Patrick’s Day.
